Introduction
For the past two years, a group of MHRRC members has been meeting for weekend long runs at various places in Dutchess and Ulster counties. These runs are now being organized as part of the new Training Runs Committee: Any MHRRC member who would like to participate is encouraged to join us.
- Questions? Email Polly Sparling (psparling@mhrrc.org).
- Have a route you'd like us to try? We'd love to hear about it; please let Polly know the details via email.
- Hope to see you on our Sunday (or sometimes Saturday) training run!
TRAINING RUN SCHEDULED FOR JULY 27
It looks like we're in for another steamy weekend weather-wise, so I'm still inclined to run somewhere shady and away from traffic. That means Millbrook! We'll meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Millbrook Training Center parking lot on Route 44 outside of Millbrook village. This course follows deserted (and mostly unpaved) back roads past pretty farms and wooded areas. But I can't lie -- there are some challenging hills along the way. Our usual route is 8 miles, but I'm hoping to add on two or three extra -- if that's too far for you, there are easy-to-find landmarks for shorter distances. No bathroom facilities, but plenty of trees.
DIRECTIONS FROM POUGHKEEPSIE: Take Route 44 east through Poughkeepsie, Pleasant Valley, and past entrance to Taconic State Parkway. Bear right when Route 44 merges with Route 82. Go about 1/2 mile, then make LEFT at Millbrook Training Center (Fowler Road). Meet us in the parking lot behind building. Hope to see you there!
Here’s how the group works:
- The date, time, place, and route that we plan on running will be posted on this page each week.
- You decide to show up, or not.
- You are responsible for bringing whatever supplies (water, gel, a friend or two, etc.) that you need.
- Polly Sparling is the committee chairperson and organizer. If you email her by 6 p.m. the day before the run, she will alert you to any last-minute changes due to bad weather, etc.
- At the present time, our pace is "leisurely" (11-12 minutes). Most (but not all) of the current group members are female, but we welcome anyone who wants to join us. We can accommodate whatever shape you are in, and routes can be modified if necessary. We have some walk-runners, and also some people who are a bit speedier than others, but we don't leave anyone behind, no matter what.
Want a different time, place, pace, etc.?
Want to set up your own training run? Simply contact the webmaster or Polly to have your run published on the web site. You set the date, time, pace, place and whoever shows up, shows up. This is a great way to meet other runners and get motivated for spring and summer running/races.
