Volunteer needed for Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Dear Supporter of Walking and Bicycling:

The Poughkeepsie-Dutchess County Transportation Council (PDCTC) will begin updating Dutchess County’s Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan this year, and we would like to create a Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) to provide guidance and assistance with the Plan.

The plan will focus on walking and bicycling for transportation; it will not be a recreation or trails plan, though it will consider access to parks and trails by foot and bike.  The Plan is intended to outline a vision and provide guidance to municipalities. It will discuss access to schools, transit, and other destinations; designing facilities for all people; safety; and education and encouragement programs, among other topics.

The BPAC will be chaired by a PDCTC staff member, and we hope to include a cross-section of representatives from local municipalities, bicycling and walking groups, the public, and staff from County Departments and other agencies. The BPAC will meet as needed (possibly 6 times a year) and its work will be reported back to the PDCTC Executive and Technical Committees. Members will be expected to attend BPAC meetings and participate in tasks.

We are currently soliciting potential BPAC members. Please let me know by Friday, June 22nd if you would be interested in participating. The committee will need to be a manageable size, so we will prioritize groups and areas that are not represented.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (845) 486-3600 or by email. Our current Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan is on our website: www.dutchessny.gov/pdctc.htm (click on Publications, then Plans and Studies).
