Did you enjoy the Classic? Thank a volunteer!

Monday, September 16, 2013

It takes hours and hours of volunteer time to put on such a large event as the 2013 Dutchess County Classic.

Race directors Keith Axelrod and Wayne McDaniel have been working for months on this race, managing every tiny detail. All the equipment, tents, food trophies, bibs, race packets, etc. have to be pre-ordered and taken to the high school. There is a small core of dedicated volunteers who support Keith and Wayne, spending hours and hours making sure everything goes smoothly. In addition, many people show up, in the dark, on race day morning, to set up the route (over 90 heavy table taken off the truck along with countless heavy water bottles), pass out packets and tees to preregistered runners, set up tents and food tables, and countless other tasks. No one gets paid for any of this work; we are an all volunteer organization. Many thanks, volunteers!

Also, many thanks to our sponsors who provide us with so much. Please show your thanks by patronizing their businesses. Major 2013 Classic sponsors are:

  • The Poughkeepsie Journal
  • MVP Healthcare
  • Gold's Gym
  • Wendy's
  • Valley Pediatric Dentistry
  • Orthopedic Associates
  • Durants Party Rentals
  • D'Arcangelo
  • My Brother Bobby's Salsa
  • Radio Woodstock 100.1 WDST
  • Northstar Sports
  • United Group Premier Medical Group

Congratulations to all our runners. Many have trained hard and long for this race and we salute your dedication to our sport. There were a total of 1175 finishers; 470 finishers in the 5K, 543 finishers in the Half Marathon, 153 finishers in the kids race. Nice job, everyone!

Results have been published to this site under Race Results>>2007-today. There have been a few corrections to the results and we will update the web site postings as they come to our attention (email webmaster@mhrrc.org for 5K changes and vincerun@aol.com for Kids and Half Marathon changes).

If your results are in error, please contact us and we will strive to fix these problems. You can help us prevent errors by registering in the shopping cart before races ... so far, many of the errors are because of illegible writing on manual race forms or runners arriving at the last minute to register. Please be kind to our volunteers, who are giving freely of their time to correct errors.

We are also tracking down the cause of errors in the kids run. Remember, many of these kids and their parents have not been to our races. Although there are labels with runners' names on the bibs, some families mixed up the bibs among their children, resulting in lots of confusion for our scorers and kids awards ceremony. In addition, anyone with a kids bib who did not run in the race but stood by the finish line was read by our finish line antennas as finishing early. This also threw off the kids run results: some of the "winners" in the kids race did not even run the race, but stood by the finish line cheering on siblings; our equipment cannot distinguish between bib reads of runners and bib reads of kids standing by the finish line. We will get better at asking non-runners to take off their bibs and discard.

We are still getting photographs from the Classic. Links are published in Race Results>>Race Photo Albums. Nin Lei has added comments to some of his photos and you get a sense of being on the route, watching the runners go by from his photos.
