As luck would have, that day the south was hit with a rare snowfall that forced the cancellation. Even though myself and many other "snowbirds" felt the conditions were not that bad, the safety of all of those invovled was the primary concern and in hindsight cancellation was the best course of action. But the next day I did participate in the biking event and my legs appreciated the rest anyway. Hopefully there will more races than snowy days!

Runners magazines

I subscribe to that one as well - mainly because of the beginners column. If there is not much else in the issue that I can use (still just at the 5K level and have not got to the endurance level needed for some of the longer events) I at least can use that column! As for the clothing on some of the runners in Jan and Feb - well, keep in mind it is not as frigid everywhere as it gets here. And being a native from MN, I KNOW it can get worse than it gets here!

Winter gear?

I will admit to ahve wimped out for the winter - my runs have been on the treadmill at a local fitness center! Not the same I realize, but safer than on a dark icy road!

Myrtle Beach Half-Marathon

Finding it tough to get much running in for this event. Since it is followed by a bicycle event the next day, this only additional training needed. However the possibility of warmer weather and a flat course outweigh the inconveniences.

Runners magazines

Do you read/subscribe to runners' magazines? If so, which do you prefer? If not, (ummm) why not?

I just got the january 2010 issue of Runner's World magazine. While the articles were interesting and useful, I did find the cover photo, um, out of touch. It's JANUARY, for crying out loud. We (okay, *I*) need examples of winter running duds, no?

I got a real kick out of Marc Parent's column "Newbie's Chronicles". It was useful -- and funny as h***. :-) Somewhere else in the issue was a real keeper of a quote: "While we regret few of the runs we do, we regret all of the runs we miss." That has been on my mind every time I go out for a run on a frozen-cold Hudson Valley night!

I'm thinking about subscribing.... Any (other) ideas?

     Jim

Winter gear?

One more thing, if your winter running isn't isolated to sidewalks and school tracks (as in, if you run on roads - with or without plowed shoulders), I highly recommend wearing a reflective vest or outerwear with reflective piping. Since almost all of my winter running is at night, I find this VERY important! Reflective tape is available too...

Winter gear?

As in other outdoors winter activities, layering is the idea. I start with a water-resistant windbreaker as the outermost layer. When it gets cold enough, I'll wear a polypropylene undershirt at the innermost. In between, t-shirt, turtlenecks, -- the usual sort of layering stuff.

Shorts or long pants - whichever you prefer. Just important to keep your skin dry....

I also have polypro sockliners if I expect my shoes to get soaked (as from slushy puddles or freezing rain).

Hat and gloves, if you prefer. I've used cotton gardening gloves (but they get cold and floppy when they get wet). These years, my plain cotton or wool gloves work (and breathe) fine. While the sporting goods stores sell pricy "performance" clothing, I'd suggest you start with what you have, and adjust from there.

Hoping this helps!

Night Running

Actually, I can't help you with this - when it gets dark early, like it does now, I use my lunch hour to do a little running. I don't feel comfortable enough to run these country roads in the dark, now matter how much light or reflective tape I have!

New Members

I believe that we can advertise the CLUB, not just the races, at the registration tables. Yes, I see flyers for upcoming races, but encourage new memberships at each MHRCC race, in much the same way it is done when advertising the DC Classic. We would not get as many new members at the Turkey Trot or Hunns Lake, but think of the great publicity of advertising with other well-known entities like the race(s) on the Walkway over the Hudson.

Newbie who says "Thank you"

Well said! As a(nother) new club member, I feel the same way.

Winter gear?

Since I am new to running and this will be my first winter as a runner, does anyone have advice on winter clothing or gear that would be needed? Thanks!

Newbie who says "Thank you"

I would just like to say thank you for making my first few races memorable experiences. This is the only sport in which I have seen every participant cheered on and made to feel proud, regardless of finishing time or place. It is a great honor to be a part of this club and I hope to be participating in more races!

New Members

I see lots of children running in the 1-mile runs which accompany longer races. Does the club have any activities for them other than those races? (For example, having teenaged runners working the registrations for the kids' runs?)

Night Running

Another Daylight Saving Time ends, and I find myself running in the dark on week days. Usually on roads that have no sidewalks or appreciable shoulders. My running jacket has reflective piping, but that's about it.

What do other runners do for safe running at night? Wear reflective vests? Stuck reflective tape on your jackets? Carry lights?

Question about membership...

Of course your wife can be included on your membership. She needs to register on the website by creating a UserID and filling out the registration form. She can do this from any page on the MHRRC site by clicking “login” and then follow the instructions for “new registration.”

Once she does that, I will get an email and I will associate her website userID with your MHRRC membership. To remind me, please email me when she registers and I will do the association with your membership. Once that association is done, she will have membership privileges on the site and will get a copy of the emailed newsletter.

I just signed up through the online cart, and there wasn't a "family member" option, like there is on the paper application. Can i get my wife connected to my membership still?

Thank you, andrew guckian

Disney Marathon Weekend

thread is kinda old but last may 2008 at the age of 52 i decided to get into shape and being my kids and i have been to disney at least 8 times i decided to run the disney marathon.my first race was the beacon bridge run which was a sobering affair.ran the laurel 10k which i had the pleasure of being the caboose at 1.06.after numerous 5k i did the briggs mt and the last hill was horrifying.i decided not to0 run the 2009 marathon and have signed up for the 2010.also the kingston 10k with the heat almost made me pass out.june 6 of this year i ran in the deckers creek half marathon in morgantown west va.it is billed as the only downhill marathon but i think what wva considers downhill is not the same as what we do here.i did it in 2.43 and if i was 10 i think i would have cried.in these races i just keep saying to myself 16 min per mile which is the requirement.

Disney Marathon Weekend

Did anyone else go to the Disney World Marathon Weekend this past week? I ran the family 5K at the Animal Kingdom on Friday, and on Saturday I ran the 1/2 marathon (Donald's Race) - it was awesome! If you are not familiar with the races the half will have you start at Epcot and run to and through the Magic Kingdom and back to Epcot. The full marathon has you running through all 4 major parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom). The races are well organized and a blast.

Training Runs

I would be interested in joing some training runs. Right now I primarily run alone, but from what I read training in groups will make you a better runner.
