Managed/taught by Polly Sparling, this group is for all of you who wanted to learn to run but don't seem to know how to get to your first 5K. This 12 week program will get you there in time to run in the Women's Run on May 19 on the Dutchess Rail Trail.

Contact Polly if you have questions at pts4257@aol.com.

Here is a more detailed description from Polly:

We'll meet on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for 12 weeks, from March 1 through May 17, at the track at Spackenkill H.S. (I will contact the school administration prior to the start of the class to be sure we can use the track and their rest rooms, if necessary.) I'll help the participants learn to run by using the walk/run method outlined in Run Your Butt Off!, a book for novice runners published by Runner's World last year. In essence, the plan incorporates short segments of running into a 30-minute walk; as the runner gets stronger, the run segments get longer, and the walk segments shorter. By the end of the 12 weeks, the participants should be able to run a full 5K without walking (or at least that's the plan). Hopefully, most of the participants will then sign up to run their first 5K at the inaugural Women's Run.

We TENTATIVELY plan to meet on the following Saturdays in DECEMBER: the 10th, the 17th , the 24th, and the 31st at Spratt Park at 7:30 a.m. There will be no training run on Saturday, Dec. 3; please plan to join us at the MHRRC's Holiday Run in Wappingers Falls on that day.
If we are going to cancel a run due to weather, I will post a cancellation notice on Training>>Training Runs no later than 7 a.m. on the morning of the run. Thunderstorms/blizzards cancel, but rain (and light snow) do not.

Training Run Guidelines

Training runs will be held on SATURDAY MORNINGS beginning at either 7:30 or 8 a.m. Please check this page after Wednesday each week to see if a run is scheduled.

All runs will begin at Spratt Park, which is on Wilbur Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. We will meet in the parking lot next to Christo's Restaurant, in front of the baseball field. (This location is approximately one mile from the intersection of Wilbur and Spackenkill Road, on the right.)

Polly Sparling is the committee chairperson and organizer. PLEASE E-MAIL POLLY BY 6 P.M. FRIDAY EVENING IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE RUN.

BAD WEATHER NOTE: If the run is going to be cancelled due to weather, a note will be posted on this page by 7 a.m. on the day of the run.

Although the meeting place is the same, we will vary the route and distance we run each week, depending on the abilities and preferences of those who show up.

You are responsible for bringing whatever supplies (water, gel, a friend or two, etc.) that you need.

At the present time, our pace is "leisurely" (10-11 minutes). Most (but not all) of the current group members are female, but we welcome anyone who wants to join us. We can accommodate whatever shape you are in, and routes can be modified if necessary. We have some walk-runners, and also some people who are a bit speedier than others, but we don't leave anyone behind, no matter what.

NEW RUNNERS: please feel free to come and try us out!
