Marathon Project continues success at Rhinebeck 5K race

The "youth movement'' continued Saturday as the Marathon Project initiative completed its second 5-kilometer road race in two weeks.

On May 5, it was the Dutchess County YMCA Bridge Run. On May 12, it was the inaugural Dutchess County Youth Festival in Rhinebeck.

Overall race winners were Danny Rodrigguez (19:23), and Mallory Rutkoske (22:14), both from Beacon High School. There were more than 50 youth and mentors involved in the race.

"The run was a great way to kick off Youth Day and it captured the positive spirit of the event,'' Marathon Project coordinator Susanne O'Neil said.

The Marathon Project is a program that is encouraging and training youths in Poughkeepsie and Beacon to take up running. The project will culminate with the children running in the Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon in November.

Each child is paired with an adult running mentor. The group practices regularly and will continue to race in local events throughout the spring, summer and fall.
