Learn to Run Returns

Sunday, January 20, 2013

After an overwhelming response in 2012 (in which more than 40 people had to be turned away due to lack of space), the MHRRC’s Learn to Run program will again be offered this spring. Based on the how-to book Run Your Butt Off (published by the editors of Runner’s World), the 12-week program aims to help participants gradually increase their level of exercise from walking for 30 minutes to running nonstop for the same amount of time. At the conclusion of the sessions in mid-May, participants will be invited to take part in their first 5K race, either at the Women’s Run on May 18 or the Treetops to Rooftops race on June 15. Racers will receive free entry, a free race tee shirt, and a special first 5K finisher’s medal.

Arrangements are currently in the works to hold the program every Thursday from February 28 through May 16. The one-hour sessions will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Spackenkill High School track in Poughkeepsie. The program is free, but participants must register through the MHRRC website in order to take part. Shopping cart registration will start as soon as final arrangements/approvals are obtained (probably within a week) and we will publish a notice to this web site saying you can now register for Learn to Run.

Club members, there are two ways you can help make this program a success. First, encourage any friends or family members interested in learning to run to sign up. And second, please consider helping out at one or more Learn to Run sessions. Don’t worry: you don’t have to commit to being at the track for 12 straight weeks. But we would appreciate your help on an occasional basis; you can teach a new runner so much just by jogging around the track a few times with him/her and sharing your love for the sport. If you are interested, please e-mail Polly Sparling at pts4257@aol.com. And thanks!
